Whether you are celebrating Valentine’s Day with your sweetheart, your family or with friends, San Juan Island has a variety of events and gift ideas to keep you busy Feb. 13 and 14.

■ Start your Valentine’s Day early at the Mullis center for lunch and then dancing in the evening. Their Valentine Luncheon and Red Hat Contest is Feb. 13, 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. Lunch is a donation of $4 or $6 for those under 60 years old.

If you want to move you’re dancing feet, the Mullis Center’s hosts their monthly Contra Dance Feb. 13, 7 – 9 p.m.

■ Throughout the ages, music has been used to express one’s love and it’s still happening on San Juan today. The Island Chordsmen Plus, San Juan Island’s very own six-part harmony barbershop choir will sing to your sweetie this Valentine’s Day.

Sign up for your order of a singing valentine at the choir’s booth at Marketplace Feb. 10-11, or call 378-2724. Donations are suggested.

The group will appear anywhere on the island and you can choose from a variety of six love tunes from the 20’s and 30’s.

David Munger, a member of the choir, said one year the Island Chordsman Plus sang during a marriage proposal — so they are prepared for anything.

■ Shakespeare may have written “love is blind and lovers cannot see,” but the newest installation

at the San Juan Islands Museum is worth opening your eyes, even if you’re in love.

Take your sweetheart to check out Adonna Khare’s 35-foot drawing made with carbon and pencil at IMA”s new location, 235 A Street #5, 11 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

For info, contact Jennifer Elise, director of IMA, at directorsjima@gmail.com or call

370-5050.

■ If you’re sick of buying chocolate and flowers for the one you love, consider making a $5 donation for a Wolf Hollow Wildlife Rehabilitation Center Valentine.

The cards help promote Wolf Hollow’s mission and raise funds to help care for injured and orphaned animals.

The valentines are sold at The Gourmet Galley, The Hot Shop and Flavor Emporium, The Barking Bird, Cotton, Cotton, Cotton and The Bean. For more info, call Wolf Hollow at 378-5000.

■ If that’s not enough, the Friday Harbor Animal Protection Shelter is starting their Community Pet Food Drive on Valentine’s Day.

The goal is to collect food for pets in families struggling with finances. Collections will run until Feb. 28 and will be given to the Food Bank to distribute to households in need.

Call the shelter for info on drop boxes at 378-2158.
