A new production of Wagner’s magnetic drama, “Tristan Und Isolde,” highlights the first production of The Met: Live in HD’s 2016-2017 season at San Juan Community Theatre.
Conducted by Sir Simon Rattle in his first Met performances since his 2010 debut, the opera will be presented onscreen in the Whittier Theatre on Sunday, Oct. 30 at 2 p.m.
Nina Stemme makes her company role debut as Isolde – a touchstone role she has sung with major opera companies around the world. Her Tristan is Australian heldentenor Stuart Skelton, who sang Siegmund in the Met’s Ring cycle in 2013. The cast also includes Ekaterina Gubanova as Brangäne and Evgeny Nikitin as Kurwenal (both in Met role debuts), with René Pape reprising King Marke, a role he has sung to acclaim in three previous Met seasons.
The staging, by Mariusz Treliński (who directed the 2015 Met double bill of Iolanta and Bluebeard’s Castle) is a co-production with the Festival Hall Baden-Baden, Teatr Wielki – Polish National Opera, and China National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) Beijing.
In addition to The Met: Live in HD presentations, SJCT also rebroadcasts National Theatre Live productions from Great Britain, and ballets from Bolshoi Only In Cinemas. SJCT’s HD partnerships were made possible through a generous bequest from the late Dodie Gann and underwriting by the McGee Foundation.
Tickets for “Tristan Und Isolde” are $20 for adults, $18 for SJCT members and $10 for student reserved. Due to a financial agreement with the Met, no SJCT coupons are accepted. Tickets are at www.sjctheatre.org or at the SJCT Box Office: 378-3210.
