Twenty-six teams have signed up for Relay for Life, the local fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.
The goal is 35 teams. The event is July 25, 5:30 p.m., to July 26 at 11 a.m. on the Friday Harbor High School football field.
The next Team Captains meeting is June 10, 6 p.m. in the Islanders Bank bank building. “It’s bank night — a good chance to turn in money. It’s also the second to last captains’ meeting,” said Deanna Osborn, coordinator of Relay for Life San Juan.
Survivors’ lap
Relay for Life’s first lap is reserved to recognize survivors of cancer and celebrate their lives. If you have recently been diagnosed with cancer, you are a survivor and are invited to participate.
After the opening ceremony, the Survivor’s Lap will begin. The survivors are invited to a light dinner after their lap to celebrate their success in battling cancer and their continued fight.
This year, Relay for Life also invites all caregivers to take a lap. “We want to recognize and honor them for their dedication to their loved ones and the others they have assisted in making their lives easier,” said Jackie Armstrong, chairwoman of the Survivors Committee.
“San Juan Island is participating in this event to find a cure for cancer. We are hopeful the spirit and commitment from all the teams entered will unite our community in raising funds for research to save many more lives.”
T-shirts and medals will be presented to the survivors at the event. If you want to register for the Relay, contact Armstrong, 378-1334 or jackie@rockisland.com. There will also be a registration and information booth at the Summer Arts Fair, July 19-20, at the Court House, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
You can register at the Relay at 4:30 p.m.
