Join others at The Whale Museum on June 28 at 7 p.m. for a closer look into the local marine food web through a presentation by Jess Newley of Friends of the San Juans. The presentation will be followed by a virtual reality swim off the west side of San Juan island with schools of herring, through bull kelp forests, and up the Skagit River with spawning salmon. FREE and open to the public.
Jess Newley joined Friends of the San Juans in 2018. Before working in the islands, Jess has been a SCUBA diving instructor in Egypt, taught kids Marine Science from a sailboat in the Salish Sea and sailed her own boat across the Pacific Ocean doing underwater photography projects. She went back to school to get her Master’s degree in Environmental Education from Western Washington University. She has a deep passion for the marine environment, boating, snorkeling with salmon and anything that involves being on or underwater in the Salish Sea. Collecting forage fish samples, educating boaters, teaching kids and engaging community members in conservation and science, her work at Friends of the San Juans combines all of the things she loves to do.
