Numerous islanders are descendants of American soldiers and British marines who served here during the joint military occupation of San Juan Island. They include:
— Carla Higginson, great-great-granddaughter of Christopher Rosler, private, U.S. Army. She owns his home on Rosler Road off Cattle Point Road.
— Bill Mason, grandson of Patrick Beigin, private, U.S. Army. Mason’s home is on land settled by his grandfather.
— Betty Chevalier Nash, great-granddaughter of Robert Smith, private, British Royal Marines.
— Annie Prevost, great-granddaughter of James Prevost, admiral, British Royal Navy. He was commissioner for Great Britain in the negotiations to settle the San Juan Island boundary dispute.
In addition, Catherine McGarry, the laundress at American Camp, is believed to have descendants on the island.
