Soroptimist scholarships awarded

Submitted by Soroptimist International of Friday Harbor

At the high school graduation ceremony on June 10, former President Heather Spaulding presented the annual Soroptimist Scholarships. Cheri Lanham and Hayden Mayer each received $2000 to further their education. Cheri will attend Stanford and Hayden will attend Western Washington University.

The $2,500 STEM (Science, Technology Engineering, and Math) Scholarship was awarded to Kendra Pew, who will attend Bowdoin College in Maine. All the girls had outstanding academic records, numerous examples of community service, school activities and strong letters of recommendation. Congratulations to all.

Founded in 1996, the Friday Harbor club is part of Soroptimist International of the Americas, a global organization that works to improve the lives of women and girls through programs leading to social and economic empowerment.

Friday Harbor members join with almost 80,000 Soroptimists in about 120 countries and territories to contribute time and financial support to community-based projects benefiting women and girls.

Locally, the Soroptimist International of Friday Harbor raises money all year to provide scholarships to girls and women, off-island transportation for cancer treatments and many other valuable services to women, totaling about $40,000 and thousands of volunteer hours each year to community projects.
