If you followed the news earlier this month you’ll know groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, did indeed see his shadow when he emerged from his den February 2, indicating we should all prepare for a few more weeks of winter. Don’t despair! The San Juan Islands’ Museum of Art (SJIMA) has just the thing for curing winter doldrums, especially if you have children!

The popular Family Art Days program, long enjoyed by islanders, has been a sure-fire way to promote creativity and imagination for the entire family. The museum has expanded its take-home packs to include several new, innovative projects that promise to challenge and inspire. To join in the fun, simply stop by SJIMA Saturdays between 11:00 and 1:00 to pick up your FREE art packs. Pre-registration is required each week to ensure enough kits are available. Family Art Days will continue through May 21, offering the following art packs.

MARCH

March 5 – Making your own beads with clay, paper, and paint.

March 12- Wearable art in macramé with multi-colored yarn.

March 26 – Splash-and-pour landscapes in tempera on poster board.

APRIL

April 2 – Water birds diorama including shells, driftwood, pebbles, etc.

April 9- Animal tracks in finger-paint: a panoramic view.

April 16- No class

April 23- Colorful, miniature landscapes in play dough.

April 30- Seascapes and waves with patterned paper.

MAY

May 7- Spring trees in dot-painting technique.

May 14 -Underwater landscape and marine life with recycled materials.

May 21- Paper sculpture with figures set in a spring scene.

SJIMA is located at 540 Spring Street in Friday Harbor.
