The San Juan Island Library’s free annual Summer Reading Program is underway for children, teens, and adults. This year’s theme, Find Your Voice, will feature a children and teen talent show, journal decorating, a paint night, water wars, and teen karaoke, among other special events, held at the Library and various other locations within the community.
Summer Reading Program participants win different prizes, books, and chances to take home a final grand prize. Grand prizes are available for different age groups, including a pre-k category to reward families with young children for reading to their little ones.
To enroll in the Summer Reading Program, stop by the Library any time during open hours, Monday-Friday: 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and Saturday: 10: a.m.-3 p.m., or during the Library’s Wednesday
Afternoon Performances, held at the Friday Harbor Elementary School Outdoor Pavilion. Families and teens also are welcome to try the online program option by visiting sjlib.beanstack.org or download the free Beanstack Tracker app from their mobile device store.
Adult readers can pick up book bingo cards to challenge themselves to read different literary genres and earn chances to win a gift certificate to Griffin Bay Bookstore.
“The Library’s Summer Reading Program is something we look forward to each year,” said Melina Lagios, Youth Services Manager. “It offers a wide variety of free, fun activities for everyone in our community to help foster and promote literacy and life-long learning.”
Libraries have offered summer reading programs for more than 100 years to help students keep up their reading habits and to provide free activities for all children while schools are on break for the summer months. More than 400 participants registered last year for the Library’s Summer Reading Program, which is made possible with funding from the Friends of the San Juan Island Library and the Washington State Library.
A full list of San Juan Island Library’s summer events is listed on their events calendar at sjlib.org. The first Wednesday Afternoon Performance is June 21 at 1:30 p.m. and will feature Charlie the Noise Guy followed by a Summer Kick-Off Celebration for the public.
