Two galleries throw birthday parties

Two local art galleries, waterworks gallery and Gallery San Juan, are hosting anniversary parties Saturday.

waterworks gallery celebrates its 23rd anniversary with a new exhibit featuring new works by gallery artists, 5:30-8 p.m., at waterworks gallery, Spring Street at Argyle Avenue, Friday Harbor.

At Gallery San Juan and Framing, 232 A St., owner B.J. Dollahite is throwing her gallery a 10-year birthday party by featuring local artists in a gallery opening as well.

Local artists Oak Boesky, Melissa Cole, B.J. Dollahite, Jocelyn Russell, Terri Joe Summer, Lumi Verdugo and Ann Walbert will be featured in Dollahite’s “Women of Texture” exhibit which runs through July 9.

Dollahite’s party is Saturday from 6-8:30 p.m. Call 378-1376.

Both exhibit openings are free and open to the public.

David Price’s paintings on exhibit at SJCT

Original landscape paintings by David Price will be featured in a one-person exhibit in the lobby of the San Juan Community Theatre until July 31, beginning Saturday.

The theme, “North American Tour,” was selected to present scenes Price and his wife, Joan, have enjoyed while traveling the continent in their RV, while boating, hiking, or simply recording local scenes near their home at Cape San Juan.

Price, a retired forester, moved in 1989 from Lewiston, Idaho, where he had served as forestry manager for Potlatch Corporation.

Earlier in his life, he served in the U.S. Air Force, flying the famed F-86 Sabrejet in Korea.

It wasn’t until well after retirement that he applied paint to canvas. With free time after completion of his home on the island, Price began to wonder if he had had anything to do with the genes that provided two of their three children, who have talent enough to succeed in art.

Continuing classwork with the Island Arts League has stimulated an absorbing interest and the level of proficiency on display at the theater.

He has, so far, limited his painting to landscapes with a preference for lighthouses and old barns, lakes and mountains. He expects that people and animals may find their way into some of his scenes in the future.

The theater lobby is available to the public Tuesday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
