You’ve seen their events on posters around town or maybe you’ve attended an event yourself. Over the last few months Friday Harbor’s Relay for Life has hosted a car show, jam concert, disc golf tournament, Zumba party, a spin off of American Idol and various other fundraisers.

All of this leads up to the main event July 30 and 31 at the Friday Harbor High School track for a weekend to celebrate cancer survivors and honor those lost to cancer. Participants spend up to 24 hours running or walking as a way to raise money for the American Cancer Society.

Relay for Life of Friday Harbor has already raised $21,103.72 and has 16 teams and 119 participants signed up on its website.

For Event Chair Corey Ayers, this means things are going well.

Ayers has worked with Relay for Life since she moved to the island several years ago. A friend asked her to get involved and in the years following her family pushed her to continue.

So she did.

Like many people who get involved with Relay for Life, she has family members who have faced cancer.

The National Cancer Institute estimates that by the beginning of 2007, roughly 11.7 million Americans had battled cancer.

“During the fundraisers people want to donate because they have family members with cancer,” Ayers said.
