San Juan Physical Therapy is owned and operated by Suzie Lefever who has been practicing as a physical therapist since 1983 and as a certified athletic trainer since 1978. She moved to San Juan Island in 1994 and has owned San Juan Physical Therapy for over 20 years. The Journal asked Lefever a few questions about being a woman in business.
Q: What is one thing you want islanders to know about physical therapy?
A: Physical therapy is a clinical service for people of all ages, at all levels and is proactive as well as treating already existing conditions to help people reach their personal health and fitness goals.
Q: What is the best part of working with a group of women?
A: Working with a group of women is great because there is an understood approach of caring and support. Women have natural instincts to nurture so working with other women easily allows these instincts to shine.
Q: What advice would you give to a woman who wants to become a physical therapist?
A: Be prepared for hard work and make sure you evaluate your commitment to a profession and the honor and privilege as well as the challenges that come with a profession as opposed to a job before taking physical therapy on.
Q: What is the best thing about being a woman in business on this island?
A: Same as for everyone, I imagine; serving our island residents and neighbors, contributing our gifts, talents and knowledge for a greater good, knowing we make a difference.
