Last year, the 4th of July was a great day for a picnic and an even better day for families on San Juan Island. The annual Pig War Picnic presented by the Kiwanis Club of Friday Harbor was again a great success. It has become a major fundraiser for the organization. Every year, the proceeds from this event are returned to the children of Friday Harbor. Kiwanis has given over $20,000 this year to 20 graduating seniors who will use the scholarships to attend colleges or trade schools all around the country.
Kiwanis announces a new venue change for 2024, moving the picnic from the current location at the baseball field to the County Fairgrounds on Argyle Ave. The new location and format allow for live music, multiple food vendors, arts and crafts, and more. There is a large parking area for both the picnic and parade.
In the past the menu of the picnic was limited to pulled pork sandwiches and hot dogs. This year’s event will feature a new idea – a Bite of San Juan. Modeled after the Bite of Seattle, it is a way to taste a variety of food from local restaurants and food vendors. We are offering an expanded menu including authentic Mexican Carnitas with homemade tortillas, Tacos, Burgers, Pulled Pork Sandwiches, Kosher Hot Dogs, a variety of Desserts, a Cake Walk and Beer Garden.
The new venue will offer great entertainment for the whole family. The Henry Rose Band will be on stage. Island Rec will put on activities for kids of all ages including Three-Legged Races, Gunny Sack Races, Egg Tossing and Watermelon eating contest. The event will be held at the San Juan County Fairground, Thursday, July 4th from 11:30 a.m. until 4 p.m.
Kiwanis is accepting applications for arts and crafts booths and welcomes all local artists and craftsmen. Space is limited and is on a first come basis. For more information, contact Francine Shaw at fshaw@rockisland.com or 360-298-4449.
