The scene opens on domestic normality. A wife fixes dinner, a husband chooses the wine. It is a normality, however, soon to be disrupted by events involving a certain boat sinking in the bay outside. Thus begins “The Connoisseurs,” Ed Strum’s comedy which opens Friday at San Juan Community Theatre. The performance of the play marks an important milestone for the theater. “The Connoisseurs” is the first locally written, full-length play to be staged in SJCT.

The tone of Island Stage Left’s summer production will differ this year. Far from the fun and frolic-filled “As You Like It,” which toured in 2009, this summer the company will perform Shakespeare’s “Henry V.” Compared to the happy mess of “As You Like It,” “Henry V” is a more sober piece of theater. It falls into the category of the Shakespearean “history plays,” a title applied to the 11 pieces which depict the lives of English kings. However, do not be daunted, director Helen Machin-Smith says.
Fab Four fun hits Friday Harbor on Saturday, 8 p.m. when Abbey Road Live! returns to the San Juan Community Theatre. Not your typical Beatles look-a-like tribute band (these four lads don’t have mop-top haircuts or play Rickenbacker guitars), Abbey Road Live! is a show about bringing to life some of the more mature and complex Beatles materials in a raw and spirited fashion, while remaining true to the original recordings.
