San Juan Island Chamber of Commerce’s business showcase, called The Style, debuted on Oct. 9. The event pulled in packed crowds to one of the waterfront condos at 123 West St. Businesses from the island took the opportunity to showcase their products and services before walking in The Style fashion show.
Food, games, a coloring contest, a rescue demonstration, and lots of fun are on the agenda at the Safety Fair on Saturday, Oct. 9, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Mullis Street Fire Station. Participating agencies include the Friday Harbor Fire Department, the San Juan Island Fire Department, San Juan Emergency Medical Services, the Sheriff’s Office, the Fire Marshal, the Red Cross, Firewise, San Juan County Health Department and the San Juan Ham Radio Operators.
Florence was born in Seattle to William A.H. and Catherine Philo, two immigrants from England. She grew up in Seattle, attending seven different schools as her family moved frequently. Before she met Ralph, she attended school with his niece Charlotte and they became lifelong friends.
Bill Hamel, born Oct. 18, 1936, passed away Oct. 5, 2010 in Ellensburg, Wash., while traveling to Arizona. He was born in Plattsburgh, N.Y. and moved to Orcas Island with his wife in 1985. He came to the Pacific Northwest through his employment with Boeing.

He meets Michael Madsen on the set of “Free Willy,” and the actor-poet writes about him in “The Crooked Prince.” He meets his idol, Marvel Comics legend Stan Lee, and a woman in a Catwoman outfit takes him in her arms when he hyperventilates. His latest adventure: The aspiring illustrator’s design placed third in voter balloting and eighth in judges’ balloting in the logo contest for the Stan Lee Foundation. That’s right — he placed in the top 10 twice.
Hanna Burke of Friday Harbor, a student at The American Musical and Dramatic Academy in Hollywood, Calif., is returning to the college conservatory for the performing arts to continue her studies.
The pumpkins are plump and plentiful at Guard and Connie Sundstrom’s farm on San Juan Valley Road. A salvaged building and salvaged materials contributed to the construction of the farm store, still being completed on the Sundstrom farm. Molly, the Sundstrom’s dog, takes a rest on the farm store porch, where customers can peruse corn, garden plants, oaks, pumpkins, and zucchini.
The fourth annual Artstock — a fall festival of art celebrating the diverse artistic culture of the area — is Saturday and Sunday Oct. 2-3 on San Juan Island. The weekend includes two days of open art studios and art gallery events to delight the senses and feed the soul.

Ian Matthew Crawford and Whitney Anne Suzette Dyck married July 31, 2010 in the presence of family and friends, at a friend’s estate on Lake Samish in Bellingham. Ian is the son of William Crawford of Eugene, Ore., and Sandy Train of Bellingham. Whitney, a spirited island woman, was born on San Juan Island in October 1982. Her parents, Bob of Friday Harbor, and Pam, now of Lynden, drove her to their Cattle Point Road home three hours after her birth.
Something a little different is coming to the San Juan Community Theatre in October. “I’ll Be Back Before Midnight,” written by Peter Colley, is a special effects-laden comic-drama designed to make you laugh and jump in equal measures.
Randy and Melissa “Missy” Martin announce the birth of their son, Milo Riley Martin, born July 9, at Island Hospital in Anacortes. He weighed 9 pounds 3 ounces and was 22 1/4 inches long.
The Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund has selected Kathleen Foley, director of education and outreach for the San Juan Preservation Trust, as one of six international 2010 Disney Conservation Heroes. Foley was chosen for her leadership of the Western Bluebird Reintroduction Project in the San Juan Islands, and is the only American to receive the award.
