Ask her to sing one of your favorite jazz tunes and, most likely, Greta Matassa will know it and be ready to pound out one incredible version.

With a repertoire of more than 2,000 songs, the Northwest jazz great brings her smooth, award-winning voice to San Juan Community Theatre’s Whittier Stage on Friday, Sept. 5 at 8 p.m.

Matassa was named Best Jazz Vocalist in the Northwest four times by readers of Seattle’s jazz magazine, Earshot. And the host of the syndicated “Jazz After Hours” radio program, Jim Wilke, offered high praise: “She has a fearlessness in approaching material that makes her like an instrumentalist in a jazz session.”

Matassa and her jazz quartet fill their concerts with the sounds of new material and old standards.

Matassa’s parents were big jazz fans and, from a young age, she was exposed to the greats like Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and Frank Sinatra. One of her favorite parts of her show is asking for audience requests and is often impressed by the jazz knowledge of both her younger and older audience members but admits, “It’s pretty hard to stump the band.”
