Griffin Bay Bookstore is sponsoring an author talk with the naturalist Marcia Henton Davis in its Café Monday, August 19 at 7:00 pm in Friday Harbor.
Davis analyzes the connections humans have with Killer Whales. She explores the motivation behind decisions to confine these social beings in concrete tanks, some of our historical interactions, rescue efforts, and movements to save both wild and currently captive Orcas. On the anniversary of the Tokitae’s death (aka Lolita) the author shares her experiences as someone who knew Tokitae, the whale kept for 53 years at Miami Seaquarium.
An ethologist, behaviorist, author, naturalist, and rescuer, Marcia Davis has always been fascinated by animal behavior and conservation. She met Tokitae in 1988 at the Miami Seaquarium, where she started her zoological career spanning multiple zoos and rescue facilities. She taught positive reinforcement to new zookeepers at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. In the Spring of 2023 she was invited to join the team to bring her friend Tokitae home to the Salish Sea.
