Staff report
It will be lights, camera, action for the rest of the summer at Sunken Park.
Island Rec’s free Movies in the Park series, begins at dusk, Saturdays through Sept. 1, at Sunken Park on B Street in Friday Harbor. Movies typically begin about 15-20 minutes after sunset.
Starting off the series, at about 8:44 p.m., Aug. 4, is “Guardians of the Galaxy.” Space adventurer Peter Quill, played by Chris Pratt, finds himself the quarry of relentless bounty hunters after he steals an orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain. To evade Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with four disparate misfits: Rocket Raccoon, Groot, Gamora and Drax. What makes this film even more exciting is that Pratt is a part-time resident of San Juan Island.
Attendees can bring blankets and chairs for viewing, and trash should be collected after the show: everything that attendees bring in to the park must be taken out. No alcohol is allowed at this event.
Lowell Jons, with Island Rec, recommends coming early to find friends and neighbors at this community-wide event.
“It’s fun,” said Jons about the series, which Island Rec has sponsored since 2013. “It’s a great way to watch a movie outside.”
The rest of the season’s movies are as follows:
• Sunset, which is about 8:33 p.m., Aug. 11: “Space Jam.”
• Sunset, which is about 8:07 p.m., Aug. 25: “The Secret Life of Pets.”
• Sunset, which is about 7:53 p.m., Sept. 1: “The Jungle Book” (2016).
