Liz Lovelett, an Anacortes city council member, was selected to fill the Legislative District 40 vacancy. The former Senator in that seat, Kevin Ranker, D-Orcas, resigned Jan. 11.
The process began Feb. 2, as Democratic Precinct Committee officers selected three candidates: Lovelett; former District 40 state representative Kris Lytton; and Trevor Smith, a member of the labor council.
That list of three names from which Lovelett was selected, was submitted to Whatcom, Skagit and San Juan county councils, which held a joint meeting in Skagit County on Feb. 5.
Lovelett’s biography on her website, lizlovelett.org states she is a fifth-generation Fidalgo islander, a mother and a business owner. She has served on numerous committees for the City of Anacortes, including the public safety, public works, housing affordability and community resources, personnel and depot master planning committees.
According to her website, Lovelett was instrumental in the inclusion of water management into the Anacortes comprehensive plan and sponsored resolutions supporting the city’s school bond and for oil train safety.
