The San Juan Islands Museum of Art and Sculpture Park is co-sponsoring a series of DVD viewings with the island libraries of acclaimed architect James Hubbell’s life work, to prepare for his appearance at several public events on San Juan Island Sept. 3-5.

Viewings and Q&As are scheduled at the Lopez Island Library on Aug. 8, 4-6 p.m.; Orcas Island Library, Aug. 14, 1-3 p.m.; and San Juan Island Library, Aug. 23, 6-8 p.m.. Refreshments will be served.

Who is Hubbell? He is an internationally known organic architect, painter, stained glass artist and visionary for world understanding. As an artist, he is the leading living contributor to the Arts and Crafts movement in the United States.

The DVDs include one on his life’s work, created by PBS in San Diego; and the other shows the evolution of his building projects, created to facilitate world understanding across cultures. For these projects, he brought Mexican and U.S. architectural students to Russia to work with Russian architectural students. Together, they created a community park and an amphitheater. Students from Russia, Mexico and the U.S. then went to China to work with Chinese architectural students to create a park there. Each of these projects was completed in a matter of weeks.
