Lady Washington, Hawaiian Chieftain visit Roche Harbor Aug. 4-10

The tall ships Lady Washington and Hawaiian Chieftain will make a rare stop in Roche Harbor Aug. 4-10 and offer a full slate of public activities. The vessels will fire a cannon salute to the community when they arrive at about 5:30 p.m. after an all-day passage from Anacortes.

The ships’ schedule of public sails starts with an Evening Sail aboard Lady Washington at 6 p.m. Aug. 6. An Evening Sail on Lady Washington lasts three hours and features demonstrations of tall ship handling, a sea shanty, and an opportunity to help sail the vessel. Tickets are $35 each.

On Aug. 7 at 2 p.m., Hawaiian Chieftain will take guests on an Adventure Sail, which features a chance for guests to help sail a real tall ship. A second Adventure Sail is scheduled for Aug. 8 at 10 a.m. Tickets for the Adventure Sails are $55 adults, $45 students/seniors/active military, and $35 for children 12 and younger.

On Aug. 8 at 2 p.m., both vessels will offer a Battle Sail, which includes live cannon fire (with blanks) and close-quarters maneuvers similar to an 18th-century naval action. Tickets for the Battle Sail are $60 adults, $50 students/seniors/active military, $40 children 12 and younger.

Hawaiian Chieftain will offer a two-hour Evening Sail starting at 7 p.m. Aug. 9. Tickets for the Hawaiian Chieftain Evening Sail are $25 each.

The ships will welcome the public for walk-on tours on these dates and times: Aug. 5-6, 4-5 p.m.; Aug. 7-8, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. A $3 donation per person is appreciated.
