Thursday is Kids’ Day at the San Juan County Fair. (It’s Kids’ Day on Friday too).
From noon to 5 p.m., children can enjoy unlimited rides for $20. Use the coupon on the front of The Daily Fair — available at the fair gates and The Journal booth — and get a free stick of cotton candy when you buy your wristband.
There’s other great stuff in store for the younger set Thursday — and, actually, every day of the fair.
— Get your picture taken with your friends: Mark Gardner — a professional commercial, portrait and wedding photographer — will take your picture for free at his booth outside the main exhibit hall.
He’ll shoot your picture and give you a free print, as well as a jpeg suitable for the web (or for e-mailing to your grandparents). Get your photo taken with your fair entry. Photos with Zucchini 500 entries are popular.
— Race a zucchini car: Speaking of Zucchini 500, the race superintendents tell The Daily Fair that each race day is open to everyone — there are no heats or rounds, as reported earlier.
That means, if you don’t win, you can try, try again. And have a lot of fun doing it.
— Make cool stuff, for free: In the Arts and Crafts booth in the main exhibit hall, make beadwork, 10 a.m. to noon; make a book, noon to 2 p.m.; make a treasure map collage, 2-4 p.m.; make jewelry, 6-8 p.m.
In the Green Village tent, make orca fin hats and origami whales, 2:30-3:45 p.m.
— Enjoy a show: Artists such as juggler Thomas Arthur often look for volunteers to join them on stage.
Have fun.
