Island Sinfonia carries the distinction as longest continuously performing music group in the San Juans, with more than 20 years of performances.

That’s quite a legacy carved out by the islands’ own chamber orchestra, which features musicians from all of the ferry-served islands, including Shaw, which is home of Island Sinfonia conductor Ned Griffin and where the chamber orchestra first debuted more than two decades ago.

But the Sinfonia will have a healthy dose of youth on its side in its return to Friday Harbor, May 20, for its annual spring concert.

The orchestra has bolstered its ranks for the 2012 spring concert series with seven young musicians from Orcas Island’s middle and high schools.

The concert is May 20, beginning at 3 p.m., at Friday Harbor Presbyterian Church, 425 Spring St., and it’s free, and suitable for all ages. The program includes works by acclaimed composers such as Handel, Mozart, Satie, Schubert and George Gershwin.

Island Sinfonia has dedicated its spring concert series to the memory of Carol Tully, former second violinist.
