High school, Britney Spears and ukuleles.
That might not sound like Shakespeare, but to the Friday Harbor High School Drama Group, it does.
“A Midsummer Night’s Dream” runs from Jan. 17-20 at the San Juan Community Theatre. Students added modern twists to the Bard’s classic comedy. The setting takes place in a present-day high school, lockers will transform into the original story’s forest for an epic fight scene and songs, by artists from Spears to The Beatles, will be performed. Students even wrote their own original pieces as well.
However, the mortals behind the updates weren’t that foolish to modernize every part of the play: the Shakespearean language remains untouched.
