Friday Harbor Film Festival movies to play at Grange

Submitted by the FHFF

The Friday Harbor Film Festival has selected the top-rated films of the 2017 festival to screen at the Grange in 2018.

“The Best of the Fest” will be shown every first and third Tuesday at the San Juan Island Grange, at 7 p.m.

Admission is by donation. Film Society Members can attend for free.

Jan. 2, staff will start 2018 with a powerful film, “An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power “(directed by Bonni Cohen and Jon Shenk). A decade after “An Inconvenient Truth” brought climate change into popular culture, comes the follow-up that shows just how close society is to a real energy revolution. Former Vice President Al Gore continues his tireless fight, traveling around the world training an army of climate champions and influencing international climate policy. Cameras follow him behind the scenes – in moments both private and public, funny and poignant — as he pursues the inspirational idea that while the stakes have never been higher, the perils of climate change can be overcome with human ingenuity and passion. Released in 2017, run time is 100 minutes.

Jan. 16, the multiple award-winning, beautifully filmed, “Chasing Coral” (directed by Jeff Orlowski) will be shown. Coral reefs around the world are vanishing at an unprecedented rate. A team of divers, photographers and scientists set out on an ocean adventure to discover why.

Filmed over three years, with 650-plus hours underwater, this film includes footage from over 30 countries and was made with the support of over 500 people around the world. It won Best Feature Documentary, Call to Action and Peoples Choice Awards at Boulder International Film Festival, and won Audience Award and Nominated for Grand Jury Prize at Sundance Film Festival. Released in 2017, run time is 95 minutes.
