Friday Harbor Chamber Music presents a concert on Sunday, Feb. 18 at 3 p.m. at the Friday Harbor Grange with cellist Sasha von Dassow and friends Elizabeth Schaltenbrand, piano, and Hanneke Klein-Robbenhaar, violin. Suggested donation is $25. All of the artists are residents of San Juan Island and contribute their talents to the artistic community year-round, whether it be for Melodious Notes, the San Juan Community Theatre, the San Juan Chorale, the San Juan Singers, or Studio Jamm, and most recently for Mr. von Dassow, creating the Library concert series “Inside the Music”, a monthly deep dive into musical topics featuring local performers.
Mr. von Dassow has played the cello for over 55 years and enjoyed a career performing in symphonies, as a soloist, teacher, conductor and chamber musician across the United States from Florida before relocating to the San Juans in 2011. In the upcoming concert, he will perform Johann Sebastian Bach’s Suite #3, BWV 1009, one of six celebrated pieces for cello written around 1723, with several dance-based movements. Next on the concert will be Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme, from 1877, which highlights both the virtuosity and the Romantic singing qualities of the cello, accompanied by Ms. Schaltenbrand. Gaspar Cassado, a cellist and composer from the Catalan province of Spain, composed his Suite for Cello in 1921, which is full of Flamenco fire and passion in three colorful and Impressionistic movements. Last, there will be a small bouquet of short and fun contemporary pieces with violinist Ms. Klein-Robbenhaar, including a premiere of Autumn Wedding Day, by local composer, dancer, and artist L.M. Taylor, formerly Lina Downes.
Sasha, Elizabeth, Hanneke, and constant canine companion, Nika, invite friends and neighbors to the warm and welcoming main hall of the Grange with its superb acoustics and piano on Sunday, Feb. 18 at 3 p.m.!
