What better time to indulge in pie made with slugs of whiskey than a Sunday evening in August? If you like both and want to hear what a few Northwestern writers have to say about butter and booze, come to Griffin Bay Bookstore at 7 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 19.
Kate Lebo and Sam Ligon, who edited “Pie & Whiskey,” will tell you how they enlisted writers to generate new works based on prompts that involved pie or whiskey or both. They’ll let you in on a literary collection that grew out of some rollicking readings where both pie and whiskey were served.
In short, “Pie & Whiskey,” the book, is a literary collection of new works as well as readings presented over the past six years of “Pie & Whiskey” events run by Kate Lebo and Samuel Ligon.
Following their prompts, the writers responded with surprising, funny, heartbreaking, and fantastically written stories and poems. This writing — served with a slice of pie and a shot of whiskey — at literary events, created an uncommon, as well as energized atmosphere. The anthology collects the best of that writing, along with new pieces, to bring this spirited gathering to the printed page. The book also includes a smattering of pie recipes and whiskey-centric cocktails.
Some of the contributors are: Anthony Doerr, Jess Walter, J. Robert Lennon, Kim Addonizio, Angela Garbes, Sherrie Flick, Shawn Vestal, Steve Almond, Elissa Washuta and Robert Wrigley.
