Dora Ukra is going to jail Oct. 30. The accuser: Not known. The crime: She’s got a big heart.

Ukra, who with her husband Hamid owns and operates Post San Juan, must raise $1,600 “bail” for the Muscular Dystrophy Association by month-end.

On Oct. 30 at 11 a.m., an MDA representative will “apprehend” Ukra at Post San Juan and take her to “jail” at Dos Diablos Cantina on lower Spring Street. She won’t be released until bail is raised.

To get a head start on raising the money, she’s pledging 5 percent of proceeds from her store for the next two weeks. Help her post bail — that means, give a donation — and she’ll give you 10 percent off your next purchase.

About her “accuser” — she was apparently volunteered, but the MDA won’t tell her who did it.

Still, Ukra is happy to help. “It’s kind of a fun way to raise money,” she said. But she’s quick to add, “I’ve never been arrested.”

The Muscular Dystrophy Association raises funds for research, patient support and public education. Muscular dystrophy is a group of genetic, hereditary muscle diseases that cause progressive muscle weakness. Muscular dystrophies are characterized by progressive skeletal muscle weakness, defects in muscle proteins, and the death of muscle cells and tissue.
