The Cascadian Folk duo Eden and Jeff Poynter “West My Friend” performs for one night at the San Juan Community Theatre, Sept. 14 at 7:30 p.m. playing music from their recently released album In “Constellation” as well as selections from older albums.
“These songs are inspired by the region,” Jeff said, explaining the term Cascadian Folk. “West My Friend” branches out beyond folk. Described as layered, deeply symphonic, baroque and mysterious in its own winking way. while still courting an edge of disaster. “West My Friend’s” style is simple and safe, yet complex, and fiery making it ultimately more rewarding.
Steeped in the visual styles of western Canada, “West My Friend” are veterans of the Victoria music scene.
“The Victoria music scene, for a small city has a lot going on,” Jeff said. There currently is a lack of small to midsized venues which can make it difficult for musicians starting out, according to him, however the city is working to address that.
“People are very supportive, not completive,” Eden said.
Both musicians began playing music at a young age. Eden’s interest stemmed from inspiration from her mom, and got hooked into band during her school years. In college, she got a degree in classical flute. Jeff played the recorder in first grade, and later joined a band. Now plays the according, piano and sings.
Both have classical music influences and they have worked with a number of symphonies. Jazz and pop have also influenced their music, but the Pacific Northwest itself is the biggest influence of all.
“I love the West,” Eden explained when asked about the duo’s name. “We were playing around with the phrase ‘Go West Young Man’ and we came up with West My Friend.”
“Music is a central part of being a human, like talking,” Eden said, when asked why music is important.
“One thing, for us, is that music builds community, it brings people together,” Jeff added.
For young upcoming musicians, Jeff says, “Say yest to everything because you never know what will come of it.”
“Make the music you want to make, be yourself, and work really hard!” Eden recommended.
The two have now played a breathtaking 700 concerts and recorded XX award winning albums. They have even played in teh San Juans before, some five or six years ago. They are looking forward to returning. “We are islanders at heart,” Jeff said.
Without the Sydney ferry route they have to take the ferry to Vancouver, then drive from Blaine to Anacortes.
“Its quite a drive,” Jeff noted, adding that swimming would take a lot less time, not that that is advised.
Besides songs from “Constellation,” including “Build a Bed in Saltwater,” there will be a mix from older albums as well. The audience can expect original music, they write their own songs, and intricate arrangements.
“And there will probably some silly jokes,” Jeff added.
