Pickett: larger than life, exposed
Mike Vouri and folksinger Michael Cohen return to San Juan Community Theatre for their 17th year chronicling the life of Civil War General George E. Pickett, Friday, July 11.
In “The Life & Times of General George E. Pickett”, Vouri, San Juan Island National Historical Park chief of interpretation, takes the audience back to the late 1800s and introduces them to Pickett and the variety of events, both historic and tragic, that shaped the general’s life (including Pickett’s experience as commander of U.S. forces on San Juan Island during the Pig War).
Friday’s performance, beginning at 7:30 p.m., is dedicated to director Chris DeStaffany, who passed away in February and had been with the show from its beginnings.
“It won’t be the same without him,” Vouri said. “As much as me and Mike, Chris played a major role in shaping the play.”
A second performance of the play will be held inside SJCT’s Gubelman Theatre, Aug. 21.

Days of ‘old’ at the Fair
Got an “old island” scene in mind you’d like to share?
Then the San Juan County Fair and the Island Scenes exhibit is the place for you.
Now in its fourth year at the Fair, Island Scenes: A Celebration of Place, seeks to capture and display the island’s rural, small town scenes. Artists of any age and skill level can craft and submit a scene that strikes them as “old island.” Guidelines include: one image per person, any two-dimensional medium, ready to hang, matted or framed outside dimensions of 8×10 inches, minimum, 16×20 maximum. No jurying or prizes.

Pix & Flicks: first-ever Island Rec photo contest
As part of our 30th anniversary celebration, Island Rec invites photographers of all ages to participate in its first-ever photography contest. Participants to submit original photographs that best represent Island Rec and 30 years of People, Parks, Programs, and Trails.

Pod Nod: Whale Museum’s fun-filled over-nighter
The Whale Museum’s summertime Pod Nod series kicks off with an “advanced” program for children 8 to 12 Friday, July 11, at the Whale Museum.
The program features educational and entertaining activities, such as art projects, music, games, science labs and the always popular flashlight tour of the museum’s exhibit hall. Participants will also learn about marine life “Under the Salish Sea,” see some of the creatures that make the waters of Friday Harbor their home, and learn about the importance of the marine ecosystem.
The Pod Nod begins at 6:30 p.m., with bedtime snack and breakfast included, and pickup at 8:30 a.m. the following day. Cost for museum members is $39, non-members, $49. Find registration materials at the museum website, www.whalemuseum.org, or call 378-4710, ext. 23.
Bayley, Chorba share ‘Night Music’ spotlight
This Thursday’s kickoff to San Juan Community Theatre’s Night Music Concert features two musicians with two very different styles.
Pianist David Bayley, smitten by a blues workshop in Port Townsend a year ago, will bring home the blues with smokey vocals and boogie/blues instrumentals in “Boogie, Blues and Beyond.”
Bayley will be followed by longtime indie-style guitarist and songstress Laura Lee Chorba and her “Acoustic Heart & Soul Chick-Rock” show. Chorba has been a fixture in the local music scene, and beyond, following her debut at the once-upon-a-time Mariner Restaurant in 1980.
Music starts at 7:30 p.m., preceded by a “social,” with beer, wine and desserts, in the Gubelman Theatre and Steele Memorial Garden at 7 p.m.
