Submitted by the University of Washington Friday Harbor Marine Laboratories
UW-Friday Harbor Laboratories enthusiastically invites San Juan County residents and guests to join us for our Open House on Saturday, May 18, 2024. The FHL Open House is free and is a splendid opportunity to meet scientists, staff and students and explore our research and teaching facilities. From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Friday Harbor Laboratories will be open for self-guided tours.
Our exhibits are kid-friendly, so bring the entire family for a day of learning and fun. Tour our Research Vessel, scoop plankton from our dock, learn about the research being done at the labs, and get hands-on experience with a variety of local marine organisms.
This year our talks will be at 11:30 a.m. 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. in our Lecture Hall.
11:30 a.m. – “That Tingling Sensation Means it’s Working: Impacts of Harmful Algal Bloom Toxins on Marine Mammals and other Critters” – Spencer Fire, Ph. D.
12:30 p.m. – “Re-Aligning the Stars? Captive Breeding of an Endangered Seastar for basic science, conservation and restoration” – Jason Hodin, Ph. D.
1:30 p.m. – “Books of FHL,” Drew Harvell Ph.D. and Terrie Klinger, Ph. D.
2 and 3 p.m. – Scuba Demonstrations will be on our Dock.
Green Beat Kitchen will provide lunch and other yummy treats available for purchase.
Note that only service dogs are allowed on our biological preserve, and please wear shoes (for safety reasons).
