Annual ‘Island Chordsmen Plus’ Ferry Sing, June 23, onboard inter-island ferry

The annual Ferry Sing on Thursday, June 23 is hosted by Island Chordsmen Plus, who say, “Everyone is as welcomes as the flowers in May” to come see the show.

On just one day of the year, the motor of San Juan ferries is droned out by the harmonies of barbershop singers.

The annual Ferry Sing on Thursday, June 23 is hosted by Island Chordsmen Plus, who say, “Everyone is as welcomes as the flowers in May” to come see the show. The Island Chordsmen Plus, the San Juan Island’s men barbershop group and Sound Vibrations, the women’s barbershop and jazz group, will sail from Friday Harbor at 5:40 aboard the interisland ferry, which returns at 8:25 p.m. Passengers can board at Lopez at 6:20 p.m. and return at 7:45 p.m. Passengers can also board at Shaw at 6:45 p.m. and return at 7:20 p.m.

This will be the fourth or fifth Ferry Sing for baritone Dan Drath, Island Chordsmen Plus president.

He invites everyone to “come play with a group whose only purpose is harmony.” He said the sing is highly informal so the audience can relax and taken in the breath-taking scenery while enjoying the music. Bass Don Leff suggests people bring a picnic supper.

The group will perform their regular repertoire of old and new favorites like “Georgia on My Mind,” “Danny Boy,” and “Shenandoah,”

Director Angel Michaels will also lead a community sing-along.

“The most fun is when other riders stand with us and sing,” says tenor Roz Casad. “That’s the reason we do it, to enjoy ourselves and share the harmony with other people.”
