This June, Alchemy Art Center is launching its brand-new artists-in-residence program with printmaker Katy Collier and photographer Tess Malijenovsky. The artists will be residing and working at Alchemy, as well as teaching weekly classes and weekend workshops.
Collier is an accomplished artist and instructor based in Greensboro, North Carolina. She has expertise in a number of printmaking techniques, including relief, etching, monoprints, silkscreening and more. She has taught at numerous universities and institutions nationally and is looking forward to spending a month at Alchemy sharing her skills and getting to know San Juan Island. Collier will be teaching a free weekly class in color printmaking to Alchemy members on Thursday evenings in June, as well as weekend workshops on printing on fabric and custom stamp-making.
Malijenovsky is a photographer and writer based in Portland, Oregon. She is drawn to using alternative darkroom photography techniques to create images inspired by the liminal space between the environment, the feminine and consciousness. A freelance creative with a background in environmental journalism and nonprofit communication, Malijenovsky will be teaching a free Intro to Darkroom class to Alchemy Members on Tuesday evenings in June, as well as exciting weekend workshops like nature cyanotypes.
Alchemy believes that hosting these artists on San Juan Island will infuse the island arts community with fresh perspectives and opportunities for community engagement while inspiring our artists in residence with the beautiful uniqueness of the island.
