What was there for a boy to do 80 years ago, while growing up on San Juan Island?
Well, not only does Sam Buck know, he tells.
In his latest literary creation, “Every Day is an Adventure,” Buck, 87, share stories of his childhood, military service and of scratching out a living in his later year on San Juan Island. Notable adventures include being dragged through Cattle Pass by the tide, along with a friend, in a dogfish-liver collecting expedition during World War II, besting the competition on Lopez Island to be crowned rodeo champion, as well as the background story behind the origin of San Juan Island’s golf course.
There’s something for everyone, Buck maintains: familiar faces and forgotten landmarks for elder islanders, a glimpse of days gone by for interest of all readers, and for the younger generation, tall tales about how San Juan kids entertained themselves before the advent of email and smartphones.
Self-published in collaboration with W. Bruce Conway publishing services, “Every Day is an Adventure” is available for purchase, $10, at Griffin Bay Bookstore, 155 Spring Street, Friday Harbor.
