Undoubtedly, the grandchildren and great-grandchildren of today’s Friday Harbor residents will talk about this day in 2109.
Ferry whistles blasted. Sirens sounded. A cannon was fired. And the town partied like it was 1909 again.
Friday Harbor celebrated its 100th birthday Monday with plenty of pomp and circumstance, as well as parties at three venues — the Grange Hall, the Friday Harbor Fire Station and the San Juan Island Yacht Club.
The celebrations occurred as The Journal’s Wednesday edition approached press deadline, but the news staff produced a comprehensive front-page story of the day’s events and selected eight photos from various events for the edition.
Continued centennial event coverage will be posted on SanJuanJournal.com and in the Feb. 18 Journal.
This week’s edition has three sections and 44 pages of News, Opinion, Obituaries, Sports, Island Scene, Classifieds, and Real Estate in the San Juan Islands. The edition is a record of the top stories of the week.
The Journal is available on newsstands this afternoon for 75 cents a copy. For convenient mail delivery, call 378-5696.
