As one of the actors in the Playwrights Festival that was guilty of “gratuitous amounts” of “blue” language in our production, I feel that a few comments on Howard Schonberger’s column are in order.

First and foremost, one of the roles of good community theater should be to spark social comment and discussion. For this reason, the Playwrights Festival was extremely successful. It got the audience out of their comfort zones and made them think and question.

The second point that needs to be brought up is the fact that on all the posters and fliers for the Playwrights Festival, the San Juan Community Theater was very careful to include an “R” rating disclaimer for any and all to see.

Finally, the play in question was set in a closed bar between three gentleman who really had a “tired of life” attitude. A perfect setting to drop a couple of well-delivered F-bombs.
