Help make San Juan Island radio station a reality

For several years, I have been part of a small group trying to get a radio station in Friday Harbor. Lopez Island was successful in their efforts so we are encouraged.

For several years, I have been part of a small group trying to get a radio station in Friday Harbor. Lopez Island was successful in their efforts so we are encouraged.

Spearheading this endeavor have been two people idealistically and relentlessly writing letters, filling out applications, getting all pertinent information regarding the FCC and their requirements. These two people, Jody and Michael Calhoun, have done everything short of selling their blood to make this dream come to fruition. Their application to the FCC for a permit has been accepted and now they are dangerously close to selling their blood because what we need now is money.

Why do we need a radio station in Friday Harbor? Well, we need one for emergency alerts (tsunamis, happen, you know), we need one for our intellect (dynamic and informative programming), we need one for our souls (music of all genres — classical, jazz, western, etc.), we need one for continued pride in our community (interviews with some of our exciting and interesting neighbors who have fabulous stories to share), we need one for our imagination (original plays, poetry readings, create our own soap operas), we need one for current events of interest to everyone. Radio becomes a delicious addiction, wouldn’t it be wonderful to have our own “Prairie Home Companion”?

We radio buffs are strong in spirit and flesh but like most important ideas, money is the weak link. We are awaiting details regarding a grant that may be forthcoming in the fall. If anyone reading this has any ideas to share that could result in fund-raising that would enable Friday Harbor to have a radio station we could be proud of, your suggestions would be most welcome.

We need enthusiastic support, eager participation, creative input, and that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow that would make it happen. So, if you don’t have a pot of gold but do have some good ideas regarding same, please contact Jody and Michael Calhoun, 378-3779 or e-mail sjiradio07@yahoo.com, and watch The Journal for further information regarding further meetings which will be open to the public. This is a community need and a community endeavor. Please be counted.
