Six San Juan Island-based whale watch companies will honor Earth Day by donating a portion of proceeds collected on Saturday to a pair of non-profit groups that are helping to restore Puget Sound’s marine habitat.

Maya’s Westside Charters, San Juan Excursions, San Juan Outfitters and Western Prince Whale & Wildlife Tours will each donate 25 percent of Saturday’s proceeds to Skagit Fisheries Enhancement Group. Meanwhile, San Juan Safaris will donate $300 to People for Puget Sound.

Thursday marks the 40th annual celebration of Earth Day in the U.S.

Founded in 1990, Skagit Fisheries Enhancement Group is a non-governmental organization working to enhance salmon populations by engaging communities in habitat restoration and watershed stewardship projects. Its boundaries include the Skagit River watershed, the Samish River and watersheds of the San Juan Island and north Whidbey Island.

People for Puget Sound, established in 1991, is one of the region’s leading environmental advocacy groups and promotes protection and the restoration of Puget Sound through science, education and action.
