Leiker, Salazar new owners of San Juan Septic

San Juan Septic Service Inc. is under new ownership.

The company was purchased on April 1 by Ted Leiker and Dolly Salazar of Friday Harbor.

“I’m happy to welcome Ted and Dolly to our local business community. I think they’ll do well,” former owner Craig Starr said.

Leiker had been self-employed in the swimming pool business before moving to the island in 2005. Salazar is the former executive director of the San Juan Historical Museum.

The decision to purchase San Juan Septic was a no-brainer for Leiker and Salazar.

“Luckily for us, not too many people want to work with septage for a living,” Leiker said. “But we saw a strong company with a solid history, so we jumped on it. We’ll continue to offer septic pumping services and basic maintenance checkups on San Juan, Henry and Shaw islands, and elsewhere throughout the county.”

Starr will continue to operate Starr Excavations and San Juan Organics, which have served San Juan Island since the 1990s. Starr provides septic excavating services and complete system inspections.

Help available for small-forest landowners

Small-forest landowners may be eligible for assistance with the correction, repair or removal of fish barriers in stream crossings on their land.

A small-forest landowner is a forest owner who harvests less than two million board feet of timber annually.

The Family Forest Fish Passage Program has funded 100 fish barrier removal projects since the program began in 2003. Among them were 14 projects — comprising 13 miles of habitat — in San Juan, Skagit and Whatcom counties.
