You might have noticed while driving through town that a new business has popped up where Griffin Bay Bookstore used to be before its move to Spring Street.

Harbor Gallery, owned by Frank and Annaly Ledger-wood, sells home furnishings and décor from the Philippines. The store opened in early June but is the product of about three years of planning.

Upon entering the store, you will find many vases of varying colors and in many shapes and sizes, made with natural materials like bamboo, coconut, corn and mahogany, which are all thinly cut and inlaid into the resin.

In addition to the many resin vases, there are stone tables, shelves and other pieces of furniture.

All of the décor and furniture is made by Annaly’s family in the Philippines, and is shipped to Friday Harbor about once a month. Her family has been building and creating these pieces for more than 15 years, but up until now have always sold them to distributors. Working with distributors is not very profitable, allowing the family to just barely get by, Annaly said.

The Ledgerwoods hope that with their business they can help their family make a decent income, and allow them the artistic freedom they lack when creating specific pieces for distributors. Also, because the furniture is shipped directly from the makers, the middleman has been cut out for buyers from Harbor Gallery. This helps keep these beautiful pieces within an affordable price range, just short of wholesale, the Ledgerwoods said.

In addition to the home furnishings and décor made by Annaly’s family, Harbor Gallery sells locally-made children’s clothing, and jewelry made by one of Annaly’s aunts. The Ledgerwoods plan to continue expanding with other gift items.

“We are doing the best we can,” Frank said, “The more we sell, the more we can help.”
