The Economic Development Council of San Juan County will offer a Python, Level 1 course in October and November, as part of their Tech Training Accelerator Initiative.
This six-week introductory course is designed to teach the fundamentals of the Python programming language. Python is an adaptable programming language used with basic office automation, data manipulation, and data visualization. The online course will be offered through Codecademy, and participants in the course will have two weekly online advisory sessions led by Liam Griskey-Watson, EDC’s Tech Trainer with a degree in computer science.
This course is open to participants from San Juan County, ages 18 or older who are interested in learning Python as the first step in a programming career journey or for other paying work. No prior knowledge of Python is necessary. Participants will need basic computer skills and access to a laptop or desktop computer less than five years old.
Participants will complete 2-4 hours of assignments per week on their own schedule. During the two weekly Zoom sessions, the Tech Trainer will review essential topics and answer questions. Attending the Zoom sessions is strongly recommended, but not required. Participants will receive online materials and instructions one week before the first online session.
Participants who complete the online coursework will receive a certificate of completion from Codecademy and will have the option to take a follow-up Python course.
Details: The six-week course begins Thursday, Oct. 3 and ends Saturday, Nov. 9. Each week, two Zoom advisory sessions will be held on Thursdays from 5:30 – 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. During the first session on Oct. 3, a live-streamed kick-off event will take place from 5:30 – 7 p.m. at the Orcas Island Community Foundation.
