Put away the fireworks, the party is over. Voters on Tuesday ratified a local ordinance approved by the County Council more than a year ago that bans the use of all types of so-called consumer fireworks, including those labeled “safe and sane,” such as fountains, snakes, pinwheels and sparklers.
An 11th-hour reprieve stood between some of the more popular publicly-funded programs in San Juan County and the chopping block. Today, voters granted that reprieve.
Amy Windrope is used to getting positive results. And her first-ever run at elected office proved no different. As of 8:16 p.m. today, Windrope edged past fellow candidate Jeremy Talbott 1,420 to 941 votes to earn a position on the San Juan Island Park and Recreation District board of commissioners.
There’s no margin of error left for the Wolverines. Outplayed in its post-season opener, the Friday Harbor soccer team tumbled into the consolation bracket of the District 1 playoffs after falling to Meridian 3-1 Thursday in Oak Harbor. The Wolverines face Lynden Christian (4-13) at Mount Vernon High School on Saturday in a must-win situation, and with the season on the line.
The Friday Harbor volleyball team staked out new territory with a landmark performance in its regular-season finale Tuesday at home against league-leading La Conner. For the second time in three years, voters will decide the fate of countywide legislation. Approved by the San Juan County Council in June 2008, an ordinance that would make it illegal to use any and all types of so-called consumer fireworks — including those labeled “safe and sane,” such as fountains, snakes, pinwheels and sparklers — remains in limbo pending the outcome of the Nov. 3 general election. The referendum asks voters to accept or reject the ordinance.
Islanders have been generous in ponying up at the ballot box in the past to help pay for schools, recreation and the preservation of open space. But for county government? Well, that remains to be seen. On Tuesday, it will be voters who determine just how lean and mean local government will become as San Juan County sits at a financial crossroads and its appointed and elected officials prepare for either a bailout or bust, depending on the outcome of the general election.
Big plays and a sturdy defense put the Wolverines in position to pull off a come-from-behind win. But Friday Harbor’s comeback bid came to abrupt halt with less than three minutes left in regulation as Meridian pocketed an 18-6 victory on a Friday on rain-soaked and mud-caked field in Friday Harbor.
The Wolverines eked out a tough 1-0 victory over La Conner today to secure their second successive League Championship and earn their first bye ever in post-season play. The only goal of the match was scored by Alex Freeman, who put in an Emma Ytander rebound in the third minute. The defense was pushed to the limit for the remainder of the game but did not break.
Bazoukis. Bagpipes. Fiddles and whistles. Add them up and it can mean only one thing. That’s right, the internationally-acclaimed Battlefield Band is on its way to San Juan Island. Friday’s performance begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are on sale at the theater box office or online at www.sjctheatre.org. The box office is open today through Friday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
