Prosecuting Attorney Randy Gaylord said parcel fees should be “taken off the table” as a potential source of revenue for the Public Works Department’s Solid Waste Division, a reverse of an earlier opinion by his office regarding the legality of such a fee. Unlike an excise tax, which Gaylord said can be used to generate solid waste revenue, there is no solid waste-related transaction on which such a parcel fee can be attached. Furthermore, he said, there’s no link between the impact a property owner has on the solid waste operation and the amount each would pay under that one-size-fits-all type of fee.
The San Juan County Fair will have about $5,000 from the county general fund to help it get through 2010. Whatever else the fair might need to keep itself afloat, it will have to generate on its own. That’s why a new land-use overlay has been welcomed with open arms at the headquarters of the county fair. It sets the stage for the fair to host, and to cash in on, an assortment of activities and events that have long been prohibited by land use rules that apply to all 14 acres of the fairgrounds in Friday Harbor.

A foul-prone Friday Harbor squad overcame a chorus of whistles and a 28-point performance from the league’s most prolific scorer to clinch a 58-39 win Tuesday at home over Concrete. With the victory, Friday Harbor (9-2 league, 10-9 overall) tallied win No. 4 in a row and positioned itself to complete a 20-game regular-season schedule with a winning record. With a defeat of Mount Vernon Christian at home Friday in the regular-season finale, the Wolverines would finish league play at 10-2 for the second straight year. Tipoff is 6 p.m.

The Wolverines jumped out to an early lead and never looked back after outscoring the lowly Lions (1-10 league) 16-4 in the opening period. They turned a 24-9 halftime lead into a 26-point advantage by the end of the third period, and then let the starters take a break as their backups, who outscored the visitors 14-10 down the stretch, sealed the victory in the final eight minute of regulation.
