Washington State University was ousted from the Men’s College World Series in a 7-2 loss to Arkansas June 7 in Fayetteville. But not before Friday Harbor’s Richie Ochoa made his presence known in college baseball’s premier post-season event.
The San Juan County Planning Commission will have its chance to weigh in before the County Council settles on a work plan for the pending update of the Critical Areas Ordinance. On Tuesday, the council postponed its decision on the five-part work plan to allow for modifications based on the results of Thursday’s meeting with the Planning Commission. That public meeting begins at 8:45 a.m. at the headquarters of San Juan Island Fire Department on Mullis Street.
Kelsey Barnes finished in the middle of the pack. Freshman Jadyn Slack crashed the party. And senior Kayla Short bested last year’s finish at State by two spots, as all three Wolverines held their own at the Division 1A State Track and Field Championships May 28 and 29 on the campus of Eastern Washington University.
Australia. Great Britain. British Columbia. No, we’re not talking about the Olympics, but rather the San Juan Island Marathon and its companion event, the Half-Marathon. Odds are there’ll be more than a few hearty souls from overseas and north of the border in the field this Sunday when the starting gun sounds. Several are already registered.

The season came to a screeching halt for the Friday Harbor softball team in back-to-back losses to Nooksack Valley at the District playoffs May 15 in Sedro-Woolley. The Wolverines can take some solace away from the playoffs, however, as they sandwiched a convincing 14-1, five-inning victory over Coupeville in between.
With a berth at State up for grabs and the season on the line, Friday Harbor’s Shawn Cutting turned in what may have been his best performance of the year on the mound. Unfortunately for the Wolverines, Cascade Christian southpaw Stephen Mahnken had the game of his life.
It’s do-or-die time for the Friday Harbor baseball team. The Wolverines just missed clinching a berth at the state 1A tournament May 8. Meridian’s John Murphy stroked a pinch-hit double in the eighth inning to lift the Trojans to a 4-3 extra-inning victory in the District 1 championship game in Blaine. As District 1 runner-up, Friday Harbor (17-4 overall, 14-1 league) will face Cascade Christian in the opening round of the Tri-District tournament May 15 at Sehome. The winner will earn a trip to State, while the season will come to a close for the loser.
