Roy and Anne Clauson of San Juan Island are embarking on a new endeavor with the purchase of the Office Center and its Friday Harbor location from company founder and long-time owner Jeff Van Dyke.
Trailing by a single point at the half, the Wolverines outscored the Braves by two after the break to go up by one, at 32-31, heading into the final eight minutes of regulation. They doubled the offensive output of the home team in the fourth quarter, 14-7, to clinch the come-from-behind victory.
The Friday Harbor Town Council made no bones about its intent to tighten up on town law and to clamp down on dangerous dogs, and on potentially dangerous ones as well.
Trailing 15-8 after the first period, Friday Harbor continued to struggle from the field and, more importantly, at the free-throw line in the second quarter. They managed just seven points in the period and went into the locker room down by double-digits, at 32-18, at the break.
Trailing by eight points with six minutes left in the final period, the Wolverines outscored the Crusaders 14-5 over the next three-plus minutes to erase the deficit. They took their first lead since the opening period, at 55-54, as Tanner Buck knocked down a short-range jumper with 2:45 remaining in regulation.
Gary Pfleuger, who took over as principal of Friday Harbor Elementary School in 2008, handed in his resignation Jan. 5 and will leave his position with the district at the end of the school year.
Brigham William Jones, the island’s soon-to-be newest arrival, was born Jan. 3 at Island Hospital in Anacortes and is expected to be home on Decatur sometime in the next couple of days.
In a perfect world, there would be no need for a food bank. No one would go hungry for want of a job or for lack of money. Those down on their luck wouldn’t have to choose between keeping the lights on or putting food on the table. But the world is far from perfect, and San Juan Island — its scenic beauty notwithstanding — is no exception. Perhaps no one knows that better than Dorothy Lawson, who stepped down as president of the Friday Harbor Food Bank late last year after nearly three decades of managing what has evolved into one of the island’s most widely-supported, and important, institutions.
The Wolverines, who missed their first 10 shots of the game, trailed 14-4 after the first quarter and played catch-up the rest of the way.
Be prepared to pay a bit more for building and land-use permits in some categories beginning Jan. 1. Among the pending price hikes, approved Dec. 7 by the County Council, perhaps the most notable is a three-fold increase in the cost of owner/builder permits, as well as for an initial plan review required for projects that fall into that “do-it-yourself” type of development.
Property owners with an approved site plan will have a four-year buffer against changes in land use rules if backers of a mini-initiative have their way. Sponsored by the San Juan County Association of Realtors, the mini-initiative would extend from six months to four years the duration that a binding site plan is “vested,” is subject to rules in place at the time it was approved and, as a result, is immune from regulatory changes, such as larger buffers or increased setbacks.
Designated as L-117 by the Center, the most recent newborn is believed to have been only a couple weeks old when it was sighted in the close company of several L-pod females on Dec. 6 near Hein Bank and the east entrance of the Strait of de Fuca.
The Wolverines jumped out in front early, led 28-9 at the break, held Coupeville to just two points in the third period, and then coasted to victory in their first game of the season before the home crowd. Friday Harbor’s starting five sat out the bulk of the final period as the backups outscored Coupeville 9-6 while sealing the win.
