The U.S. Coast Guard is in the final stages of planning for performing repairs to the foundation of the Cattle Point Lighthouse. Since 2010 the Coast Guard has been concerned about stability of the lighthouse foundation which has been progressively eroded by winds and foot traffic. The Coast Guard has worked with appropriate environmental agencies to consider possible impacts of the planned work on the lighthouse parcel and on Bureau of Land Management property the Coast Guard must cross to access the lighthouse. Tentative funding has been secured with construction work possibly starting early next year. The Coast Guard and Bureau of Land Management are hosting a public information sharing meeting on Oct. 12 to solicit community interest and concerns associated with the lighthouse and foundation repair work. The Bureau of Land Management is also considering formation of a community partnering group for the lighthouse if there is interest. Coast Guard and Bureau of Land Management personnel will be available on Wednesday, Oct. 12 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the San Juan Island Grange #966, 152 First Street North, Friday Harbor, Washington.
