The San Juan Islands Museum of Art and Sculpture Park, IMA, is sponsoring a series of events with James Hubbell, internationally acclaimed organic builder, painter, stained glass artist and visionary for world understanding.

Hubbell and his wife, Anne, will be involving islanders in a series of public discussions and presentations throughout the Labor Day weekend.

Hubbell is known for his building projects, created to facilitate world understanding across cultures, he is also an artist — the leading living contributor to the Arts and Crafts movement in the United States.

On Sept. 3, 10:30 a.m., Anne Hubbell will lead a public discussion on beauty titled: “Is Beauty More Powerful Than We Know?” The event, in the Gubleman Room in the San Juan Community Theatre.

On Sept. 3, 4:30 p.m., in the Gubleman Room, there will be an important discussion group event held with James Hubbell and San Juan County artists. Up to 60 artists will be able to attend this discussion.

Sept. 4, 7:30 p.m., as part of IMA’s “Art as a Voice” community presentation series, James Hubbell will offer a lecture at the San Juan Community Theatre entitled “Bridges … How Painting Impacts Sculpture, Community, Spirit, and the Universe.”

On Sept. 5, 2:30 p.m., the James Hubbell Community Conversation will take place at the Sculpture Park in Roche Harbor.

“He is one of the pioneers of ‘Organic Building,’ using stained glass, custom metal work and curving shapes to envelope you in a world of his own,” said Nina Pellar Le Baron, a San Juan Island architect, IMA board member and Hubbell admirer.

“His Chart House restaurants that he did in San Diego in the 1970s were hallmark environments for the soul … He brings cultural projects that he has worked on from around the world (such) as “Peace Parks” and I am looking forward to hear what he suggests for the Sculpture Park. His lecture on Friday, Sept. 4 at the Community Theatre will be a good introduction to his work and I think that the community will be rewarded with his energy and vision.”
