The Orcas Island girls basketball team defied all expectations by knocking off the Pomeroy Pirates with a 3-point buzzer-beater and finishing fifth at the 2B state tournament Friday in Spokane.

Trailing by two with 9.8 seconds left in regulation, junior Lanie Padbury grabbed a rebound off a missed free-throw and passed to Stephanie Shaw at mid-court, who in turn passed the ball back to Padbury with only a moment left on the game clock.

Padbury launched a shot from beyond the 3-point arc that banked off the backboard and drained the net, stamping an exclamation point on an improbable 50-49 win.

“I’m still not sure I saw what I thought I saw,” Orcas Head Coach Terry Moran-Hodge said of Padbury’s buzzer-beater. “It was too perfect to be believable.”

The Vikings, at 11-10, finished the season one game above the .500 mark. Meanwhile, La Conner (18-6 overall), which beat Pomeroy in the opening round of the tournament, dropped their next two games to place seventh at State.
