An 18-year-old man and three San Juan Island girls face alcohol-related charges following a late-night rollover crash Friday near the intersection of Beaverton Valley and No. 2 Schoolhouse roads.
According to the San Juan County Sheriff’s Department, none of the four suffered serious injury, though one of the girls was flown off-island with possible internal injuries shortly after the crash. Those injuries proved to be relatively minor and she has since returned to the island, Undersheriff Jon Zerby said.
According to authorities, the four were westbound on Beaverton Valley Road in a Ford Explorer when one of the girls lost control of the vehicle and drove off the road just before the stroke of midnight. All four managed to get out of the vehicle, which landed upside down in a ditch in the 2600 block of Beaverton Valley Road, and left the scene to seek help at nearby home.
Zerby said that inexperience, alcohol and icy road conditions likely combined in causing the crash. The driver, he said, appears to have been driving at the posted speed limit, 45 mph, or a little below, but too fast for road conditions at that time. She likely will soon be in District Court to face a charge of DUI, he said.
The 18-year-old man, who Zerby identified as Frank Ausilio, was charged with furnishing alcohol to a minor in addition to being arrested for being a minor in possession of alcohol shortly after the crash.
