A San Juan Island man remains in serious condition following a collision June 25 in which his motorcycle struck a deer.

Gary Bowman, 46, suffered severe head injuries in the crash. He was breathing on his own but still unconscious as of early this week, according to a source close to the family.

Bowman was treated at the scene of the crash by local paramedics and was unconscious when he was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. He suffered a broken collar bone and severe head injuries in the crash, reported about 8:30 p.m., near the intersection of Roche Harbor Road and Upper Drive.

Messages left at the Bowman home were not returned as of The Journal’s press deadline Monday.

According to the Sheriff’s Department, Bowman was northbound on his 2004 Kawasaki at the time of the crash. The deer, which was fatally injured in the crash, apparently jumped onto the pavement from the south side of the road. Bowman was thrown from the motorcycle and it skidded along the roadway about 95 feet before coming to a stop.
