Two-time San Juan Island Quest Adventure Race winner John Pachuta came up short this year.

Kirkland resident Peteris Ledins finished the Sept. 25 race in 4 hours 8 minutes to win the 2010 title.

Course Producer/Manager Brent Molsberry included kayaking, mountain biking, orienteering, trekking, and a couple of “special” tasks for the competitors this year. Special tasks included bike polo and standup paddleboard.

Ledins, a native of Latvia, is no stranger to Adventure Racing. He’s completed several 24-hour races and has his sights on qualifying for the World Championships.

Several islanders competed in this year’s race. Among them were Meghan Hoffman and Kathleen Foley, competing as Team Kayakasaurus. They placed fourth overall and first among women.

Mark and Jen Fleming competed for the third time under team name Checkpoint 7, named after a checkpoint they couldn’t find in the 2009 race. Sam Leigh and Julie Ochoa completed their first Adventure Race as Team Xee (pronounced Zee).
